Wind And Shadow by Kathy Tyers
Review by Teisha Priest

Kathy Tyers has done it again! Wind and Shadow, published in 2011 by Marcher Lord Press, is a fantastic addition to the Firebird series. This fourth book picks up the story of Brennen and Firebird Caldwell’s children.

Twin brothers Kinnor and Kiel are polar opposites whose lives have taken very different directions. But events have been set into motion that will bring them both to the same planet and put both of them at risk. Added into the mix is Wind Hayworth, a woman dedicated to bringing about peace between her people, the formerly called Shuhr, and the Sentinels. Trusted by neither side, Wind finds a chance to belong in Captain Kinnor Caldwell… if he can get past his own distrust of her. Kiel faces his own challenge as a being of great power seeks to corrupt him and undermine his faith. The fate of many rests on the choices that will be made by both brothers.

Wind and Shadow is set a couple of decades after the end of the Firebird trilogy. The appearance of old characters makes the setting feel familiar, while the new additions to the cast keep the story fresh. As always, Kathy’s characters all have their own personal issues and weaknesses to deal with, giving them a realistic depth. I particularly appreciated the glimpse into the sometimes-difficult family relationships of the main characters. The plot is fast-paced, yet full of richly detailed descriptions. Once again, she utilizes a gripping story to explore theological questions.

I’ve read the Firebird trilogy several times, and Wind and Shadow is another book that I will be enjoying again and again. Speculative fiction fans will find Kathy’s latest book a lovely addition to their library!

Wind and Shadow is available in eBook and paperback formats from Marcher Lord Press and Amazon.com.
