Stephen Lawhead: Fantasy

The Skin Map is my first book review for the Christian Science Fiction & Fantasy Blog Tour, and I would like to say thank you to the hard working people over a CSFF blog for allowing me to take part. I would also like to thank Thomas Nelson Publishing for sending me a copy to review.

The Skin Map: day one of the three day blog tour.

To describe my first impression of this book I must take you back in time to the year 1998. My wife had just taken a steaming pan of cupcake-like pastries from the oven, and I was irresistibly drawn to them, like a bug to a bug light. I slid one of the tasty morsels ever so delicately from the pan, and took a nibble. As the crumbly substance touched my tongue, I was instantly horrified. Not only was it devoid of any detectable sweetness, it was so dry it actually sucked moisture from my mouth. It was all I could do not to spit it out.
My wife looked over at me and smiled. "What do you think?"
I responded honestly-- as is my way, "Honey, I'm sorry to say, but this may be the worst cupcake I have ever eaten."
Her face immediately scrunched up in response. "It's not a cupcake. It's a corn muffin."
As her words slowly bore into my thick skull, I felt the room grow large and tilt slightly. All I had understood about the universe was being called into question. Not a cupcake? Could it be true? I took a few more quick chews ... blinked, and said, "mmmm, good corn muffin!"

The Skin Map was not unlike my wife's corn muffins. I'll explain in tomorrow's post.

John,

Are you saying this book tastes like a corn muffin? You're supposed to READ it, not EAT it.

Looking forward to your review. This book sounds interesting.

That post made me laugh out loud. ;)

Yup, reminds me of the time someone in the family gave me a spoonful of sour cream when I was a kid. Worst taste ever! Especially when you're expecting ice cream. But now I like sour cream, and eat it on all sorts of stuff.

That's the way I read, too -- the bookshelves are full of eclectic reading material, some of which I had to warm up to and realize that my expectations were totally headed in the wrong direction.

Sounds like it would be a great book. The beginning of a good series.
